Long Reining

With the long reins you can show all dressage movements up to the high school movements.

These are:

Vorführung am langen Zügel
  • All lateral work
  • Piaffe
  • Passage
  • Flying changes
  • Pirouettes
  • Levade

When you have a dressage horse most of the movements are trained under saddle after the work in hand. After they are developed with a rider you can start with working on the long reins. When you have a Shetland or a Mini-Pony it is much more difficult because you can’t train them under saddle before.

With perfect harmonie and expressive cadence Lancelot moves on the long reins. The connection to the horses mouth must be featherlight and elastic without disturbing the fluence. The vorwarddriving aids are more important than the restraining aids like when you ride.

Horses who tend to kick when you touch them with a whip are not suitable to be worked on long reins. It is too dangerous! Very easily you can get severe injuries. Not every horse is a horse for long reining!
